Purim is a Jewish holiday which commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from annihilation at the hands of Haman, as recounted in the Book of Esther. While the main protagonist of Purim is Queen Esther, less was mentioned about Mordecai, who was descendant of Mephibosheth, grandson of disgraced king Saul. His destiny began unfolding during exile in Persian while serving at king’s gate, discovered and thus thwarted a plot to assassinate king Ahasuerus. Despite his achievement, he was forgotten and unrewarded. Instead, Haman, an Agagite was promoted and he sought to annihilate the Jews. Haman was a descendant of Agag, king of Amalekites, spared by king Saul; but his clemency was an act of disobedience to the will of God to annihilate all of them (1 Sam 15). Thus, decades later came Haman, a descendant of Amalekites sought to annihilate Jews. Such was the consequence of King Saul’s sparing them in disobedience to the will of God. Haman plotted and gotten the irreversible royal decree for annihilate of Jews. As the queen and Mordecai and the Jews mourned, fasted with weeping and wailing, God was faithful to keep His people from annihilation in exile (Jer 29:4-14). God then set His plans in motion. The king unable to sleep, discovered that Mordecai was the main person who thwarted his assassination and sought to reward him. The king honored Mordecai and arrayed him with royal robe, crown and parade as suggested by Haman who foolishly assumed himself would receive. Instead, Haman was hanged on the gallows he had built for Mordecai as well as his whole family killed. The king gave Mordecai the position and house of Haman, and royal decree for Jews to avenge themselves on their enemies on the day of 1st royal edict of annihilation of Jews. The fame and fear of Mordecai was so great that the government officials helped the united Jews against their enemies. There was great victory and celebration for God had turned the tables around. The wicked fall into their own nets (evil plots) (Psa 141:10) whilst the righteous feasted on table of abundance and promotion (Psa 23:5,6)
Perhaps, we may have an horrific upbringing or even shameful past history. We may feel unappreciated, forgotten, insignificant and unrecognized. But God can change lives just as He did with Queen Esther and Mordecai, so He can do with us, His children. He has plans and purposes for our lives.
Jere 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart;
Psa 139:13-17 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God!
God fashioned each of us intricately and wonderfully made with unique appearance, personality and abilities. A book in heaven was written containing our destiny even before we were born. God has purposes and plans for us and only by embracing them we will find fulfillment of our purposes.
God’s plans are for us to be fruitful and prosper with His plans in His own ways . in Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Not only that, we received holy callings with grace to accomplish His purposes as in 2 Timothy 1:9 that God “has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.”
Rom 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Then, by yielding to God’s plans and purposes will be able to experience his good, pleasing and perfect will. By rejecting them, and following our own ways with the world, will live a life devoid of the purposes we were born for, but filled with much vanities, toils, pains and struggles. But then it’s your choice.
